Information Retrieval via Statistical Language Modeling

Speaker:
Matt Lease
Abstract:
Statistical language modeling (LM) has emerged in recent years as an increasingly popular and effective paradigm for information retrieval (IR) because of its solid statistical foundation, the extensive body of existing LM methodology to build upon, and because even simple LM-based retrieval methods have been shown to perform well empirically. This talk will provide a brief introduction to the LM paradigm for IR: principles and framework, evaluation and data, research problems, and where to find additional information.
